1. A More Able pupil at Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy has a destination grade 9 in English and/or Maths. They also have a destination grade 9 in all other subjects. 2. What do we offer?
At Lord Lawson we use a range of teaching and organisational strategies to provide the best learning outcomes for all of our pupils including our More Able pupils. We aim to have a positive impact on More Able pupils’ lives in three key areas. (A) - Acceleration (C) - Challenge (E) - Enrichment = ACE
1. Acceleration 2. Challenge 3. Enrichment
Acceleration is used when a pupil is involved in a leadership programme. Selected pupils can participate in The Brilliant Club. This is an award-winning educational charity that exists to widen access to highly selective universities. As part of this club, pupils can participate in a Scholars Programme which offers pupils the chance to experience a challenging academic environment which promotes a culture of excellence and hard work. We offer participation in a Leadership Skills Programme supporting pupils’ practical learning developing leadership skills and knowledge. This compliments our core principles by actively promoting good “learning” behaviours and mutual respect through our 5 Rs (+1). It is anticipated that these pupils will become ambassadors for the Academy taking an active role in promoting these learning behaviours.
More Able pupils will be encouraged to access materials and focus on teaching and learning tasks that require higher order thinking skills including using schemas such as Bloom’s Taxonomy, Solo Taxonomy and Socratic questioning.
We offer additional opportunities for pupils to broaden their knowledge in a wider context. We offer a regular, varied and on-going programme of enrichment activities as a key component of our provision for More Able pupils. Our programme includes: Visits to universities Visits from expert speakers Enrichment days Business and/or community projects Enterprise days and events
Parents will have the opportunity to nominate their son/daughter for a new talented register. This register will contain the names of pupils who represent their country, county, district or area in any sporting activity. Students with a high level of musical talent or who have excelled in Drama or the Arts including Design and Technology can also participate.
