SUMMER ACTIVITIES SCHOOL 2011
As part of the transition process from year 6 to year 7, eighty five students, from various Primary Schools, were invited to the ‘Summer Activities School’. Having received extra funding this year enabled the school to have two student groups, each attending for 2 weeks of the Summer Holidays. We had several activities e.g. bowling, cookery, team building, African drumming, a visit to Whickham Thorns with archery, snow tubing, problem solving and nightline activities, plate or cup painting, basket ball and other sports, craft activities, clay tile making, making bird feeders and insect boxes for the garden and a very successful ‘Ready Steady Cook’ competition.
A referral process is in place;
Any student, who is the only one coming to Lord Lawson from their Primary School, is always invited to the group enabling them to form friendships prior to starting in September.
This helps alleviate any worries they may have.
Students who are anxious about the transition, finding it difficult to form friendships or who are shy and quiet are also invited.
These places are filled, referrals are taken from parents who have received information about the group from the Lord Lawson starter packs.
Any student who staff think would benefit from attending.
We have had yet another very successful year, the students being very positive with their comments. Parents and students are asked to complete an evaluation form after the 2 weeks, giving their thoughts about the group and how successful they feel it has been.
