Olympic Mascot visits Lord Lawson
The day started at 9am when Wenlock, one of the Olympic mascots, first arrived at Lord Lawson. This made the Olympic dream finally seem like reality. The mascots have been to Derby, Scotland, London, Ireland and many more places and today the North East eventually got the pleasure of them spreading the Olympic spirit with Wenlocks’ presence.
The mascot has busy days posing for photos, meeting athletes and doing interviews but he took time out of his busy schedule to take a small tour of the school, start the year 7 handball interhouse, watch the girls’ trampolining, conduct an interview, judge our banner display competition and pose for endless amounts of photos with all the eager students.
The mascots are really excited for the Olympics and will be waiting at the finish line encouraging some of the athletes they’ve met including Usain Bolt who Wenlock said is the most famous person he’s met. Wenlock has been inspired by all the athletes they’ve met and came to pass on the inspiration and respect he’s learned from them and if he had the chance to participate in an event it would be table tennis although he would happily take part in any.
He has high hopes for team GB in the Olympics this year and has predicted they will win every medal possible!
Here are some pupils’ opinions and feelings after meeting Wenlock the Mascot:
Luke Cuthbertson from year 10: ‘I thought it was different but exciting to meet the mascot and see him participating.’
Alain Graham from year 7: ‘It’s been a happy and exiting day seeing the mascot and it was really interesting to see what was happening and what is involved in having a life as a mascot.’
Mr Thompson: ‘It has been an unreal day and I am absolutely buzzing off it. It has been great to promote sport within school. ‘
‘Let the countdown begin!’
