CIC County Cup Victory
"Year 9's Win CIC County Cup for first time in history"
The Year 9 football team travelled to Sunderland AFC's Academy of Light on Monday 4th April to play against local rivals Park View School in the final of the Consett Ironworks Cup (CIC County). Previous rounds saw the team beat High Tunstall, Monkwearmouth and Venerable Bede in fairly comfortable fashion. Park View also seemingly cruised through to the final with a notable scalp being that of local Gateshead rivals Ryton School.
The game was played in very windy conditions but both teams adapted well in the early stages. Sam Skelton and Scott McArdle went close for Lord Lawson whilst Bradley Peart was forced into a couple of excellent saves at the other end. The game continued to be very competitive up until the half time whistle with both sides playing some excellent football.
The sides went in level at 0-0.
The team were encouraged during the half time team talk and this appeared to pay immediate dividends when Scott McArdle opened the scoring for Lord Lawson within two minutes of the restart. Lord Lawson now with the wind at their back were pressing very hard and deservedly extended their lead with a superb left footed volley from Lewis Forster. Park View heads started to drop and Lord Lawson sensed the opportunity to kill off the game. Jonathan Hewett found himself open at the back post ready to apply a finish before a Park View defender inadvertedly slid the ball into his own net. Park View to their credit responded well and managed to pull one goal back before Lord Lawson killed the game off with a Jonathan Hewett strike following a scramble in the box.
The boys become the first side in the history of Lord Lawson to win in the CIC Competition and will now look to big games on Monday against Ryton and on Wednesday against Whickham to secure their first league title.
Well done to the boys and thank you to Sunderland AFC for hosting the final.
Mr Richards
