Volunteering at Gibside Gardens

  • Fleet prefects went to Gibside recently to do some voluntary outdoor work......More

Jack Gurr

  • Keen footballer Jack, who plays right wing, for Wallsend Boys Football Club, recently visited Phoenix, Arizona - U.S.A., with his team to play in a 'Soccer' competition. The competition comprised 2 leagues of 8 teams, the winners of each league played in the final. Jack scored a goal in the first game, and his team went on to win their league and then went on to victory in the final winning it 3 - 0!

While in Arizona Jack visited several interesting places including a Desert Museum and went bowling American style!!! Jack and 3 other Wallsend players so impressed while out there, that they have been invited to attend the 'David Beckham's
    Football Academy', at Greenwich near
    London, in April this year!!

Jack and his teammates are hoping that just maybe 'The Man' himself will be there to pass on a few tips to our budding young footballers!!! We wish Jack and his friends the very best of luck and hope they enjoy their time at the Academy and maybe with a bit of luck, they can get 'Beckham's' autography for the House notice board!!!

Aidan Beck

  • left handed spin bowler and left handed batsman. Aidan's love of cricket comes from his grandfather, who played for Boldon Colliery in his younger days, where he displayed great skill with both bat and ball. He regularly took Aidan to see Durham play at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, where Aidan became involved with "The Young Lions" team, training every Monday night and took part in events during the school holidays. In 2004 he started playing for Washington Cricket Club attending their weekly training sessions. He was delighted to be picked to play in his very first season. The highlight of his first season was when he took 4 wickets in 1 game at Dawdon. His team won the Under 11's league that season, losing only one game!! Aidan was then asked to attend County Trials, where he got through the 1st stage. His Young Lions coach nominated him and another player to interview Mike Gatting, ex-England Cricket Captain; the interview was printed in a local paper. Aidan and other young cricketers had the privilege of forming the guard of honour at the England V Bangladesh Test Match at the Riverside in 2005. In 2006 Aidan was picked as Vice Captain for his team, he and the Captain opened the batting every game. Coupled with Aidan's skill with a cricket ball his team won the Coast League Under 11's Cup in its very first year!!! Once again Aidan was selected for County Trials and this time he got through the 1st and 2nd stages. His Year 6 teacher nominated him for a Sports Award from Gateshead Council for his cricketing achievements. Aidan moved to the Under 13's team in 2007 and despite a very wet summer (rain stopped play!!) he still managed to score 46 runs in a game against Peterlee and win the Under 13's Player of the Year award. Once again he was nominated for County Trials and is attending the 3rd stage at the County facilities at the Riverside ground. Aidan hopes this summer will be a dry one so he can put into practise all he has learnt this winter and hopefully he will surpass this season's batting and bowling scores.
Happy New Year

    Prefects
  • Christmas Cheer!!

As part of our drive in Fleet House to develop the community role of our Prefects, we visited Shadon House in Barley Mow. Shadon House is a residential/respite facility for older people with dementia. The Prefects organised a craft session which included making Christmas cards and painting Christmas decorations. Kim West also entertained the residents will a Christmas dance. The prefects also served tea, coffee and Christmas nibbles. The afternoon was a huge success with the staff at the home being extremely complimentary about the students and the pleasure they had given the residents. Thanks to Jodie Simpson (organiser), Chelsea Burn, Rachel Gray, Rachel Keeping, Rebecca Sheriff and Kim West.
