Visit of Toru Nishimura
Mayor of Komatsu City Japan, 20th June 2008
We were delighted that the Mayor of Komatsu City, Japan, Mr Nishimura visited our school on Friday bringing greetings from Komatsu City High School with whom we are twinned.
On Arrival he was greeted by some enthusiastic flag waving year 8 students who were gathered on the balcony in the dramatic reception area of the new building. After the Japanese national anthem was played by Magda Nyadu and Evan Hook Mayor Nishimura was formally welcomed to Lord Lawson School by Mr Grigg. In His reply Mayor Nishimura thanked us for the inter-school links already established and encouraged both staff and students to continue to strengthen those friendships in the future.
Gifts were exchanged after refreshments in the learning resource centre while background music was provided by Heather Addison and Scott Nesbitt. Mayor Nishimura was keen to have a tour of the school and was particularly interested in the vocational subjects being taught including Hairdressing, Food Technology and Engineering.
The visit of Mayor Nishimura succeeded in strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual respect which exists between the students, staff and parents of Komatsu City High School; we look forward to future exchange visits which have been life changing experiences for those staff and students involved.
In recognition of the significant role Mayor Nishimura has played in the twinning of our towns he was made an Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Gateshead at a ceremony in the council chamber. Specific mention was made in his speech of the bond of friendship between Lord Lawson and Komatsu City High school; we endeavour to continue to develop our friendship in the years ahead.
