A Midsummer Nights Dream
A year 12 Drama group prsesntation
A huge challenge faced the Year 12 Drama Group on 1 April 2008, the opening night of their version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A production that was set in an art gallery with paintings that came to life; a ‘forest’ that was an art exhibition and the rude mechanicals who were cleaners of the gallery – a daring concept that had the potential to be wonderful or fail miserably. Fortunately, because of the talent, enthusiasm, hard work and belief of the cast and production team, this production was amazing. The inclusion of Titania’s Parisian ‘ladies of the night’ dancing to Roxanne from Moulin Rouge – alongside Oberon’s shadows, moving like an oil slick to The Lord of the Rings theme tune – were all theatrical elements that definitely enhanced the overall impact on the audience. However, the performance belonged to the main cast of Year 12 Drama students who excelled in their understanding and interpretation of the text and performed as if their lives depended on it. There were no stars – just a wonderful ‘ensemble performance’ of like minded drama students.
One of my proudest moments, and certainly one that the group will remember for a long time.
Well done to the cast, Mr Rothwell for his technical support, Miss Brown for the wonderful dancing, Mrs Taylor and Mrs Endacott for creating the set, Mr & Mrs Shepherd, front of house and John Walsh for keeping me sane at times.
