Waring And Netts Challenge

Liam, Sam, Ellen and Kate show off their work

On Friday 23 rd June four year 8 students (Liam Timney, Sam Thoburn, Ellen Ridley & Kate Pearson) joined forces to make up a team to represent Lord Lawson of Beamish School at the 'Waring & Netts Challenge'. The event was organized by Waring & Netts Architects as part of the national 'Architecture Week'. The schools invited to compete at the event which took place in the George Stephenson Workshops in Newcastle were Kingsmeadow, Prudhoe Highfield Middle School, Ponteland Richard Coates Middle School and Lord Lawson of Beamish School..

The Brief

To design a new office building for Waring & Netts capable of housing 100 staff. The proposed building plot was a disused warehouse on the Quayside.

Action Stations

The teams then had only 3 hours in which to sketch ideas, discuss and agree on the final design, create their designs on computer using fantastic 'sketchup' software, build a 1:100 scale model and present the project to the judges. Each team were supported by two members of the Waring & Netts staff. The team worked really well together and utilized ideas from each of the original sketches in the creation of the final design. Time was tight but the model was completed just on the strike of the gong. The judges then listened to all the presentations and assessed the quality of the computer design and the final model.

The Result

Lord Lawson of Beamish School were chosen as the winning design. The head judge commented that "the design took into account it's surroundings and a number of environmental considerations as well as being a fantastic building to work in with the added advantage of getting your car washed every time you came to work. "Special thanks to Paul & Helen from Waring & Netts who worked with our team.
