Accelerated Readers

End of Term

The introduction of this Reading Scheme into Year 7 has been very successful. All of our Y7 students are now reading books at a level appropriate to them and then taking online quizzes to test for comprehension. There is fierce competition to be the class to achieve the best scores!

Amy Oldroyd and Isobel Thompson, 2 students who have been doing particularly well on Acclerated Reader, were chosen to attend the Booktrust Teenage Prize Award Ceremony in the Penguin offices in London as a reward for their hard work and commitment. This is their account of their day.

"We were lucky enough to be invited to go down to London to the Book Trust Teenage Prize Award ceremony which took place at the Penguin offices. Whilst we were there we were able to meet 6 authors who had been nominated for the award.

The authors were:

  • Siobhan Dowd -A swift pure cry
  • Ally Kennen - Beast, Which was her very first book
  • Marcus Sedgwick - The foreshadowing
  • Paul Magrs - The Exchange
  • Anthony McGowan - Henry Tumour
  • John Singleton -Angel blood

We had pictures taken with all the authors and had the opportunity to speak to them and get their autographs .The view from the Penguin offices was amazing. It looked out over the London eye and many other famous landmarks .There were 5 teenage judges who got on the judging panel by writing a short story and the winners were selected from over 2000 entries .

They decided that the winner of the award was Henry Tumour by Anthony McGowan. The contest was very close .When the Award ceremony was over we had a couple of hours left to see some landmarks .We had an fantastic experience and enjoyed the full day."
