During Enrichment last Wednesday our Reading Champions were treated to an afternoon of Japanese Manga drawing. Andy and Sandra from Gateshead Central Library generously gave up their time to come into school and talk about all things Manga related, including the huge choice on offer of this popular genre.

In Japan, people of all ages read manga. These colourful comics appeal to boys, girls, teens and adults. One of the features of the comics is that- in keeping with the Japanese originals – they are printed backwards.

They appeal to so many because they are more accessible for readers, and in the Japanese style of storytelling, they actually speak to the reader.

Experts Sandra and Andy also hosted a drawing masterclass where students got creative and had a go at drawing some popular manga characters. Even our student teachers couldn’t resist getting involved and showing off their talents!

Students were resilient and keen to build and improve on their artwork, resulting in work being praised and judged, and prizes given for the best three.

Well done and thanks to all on this enjoyable event!

For fans of manga and new-comers to the genre, Gateshead Library have a large selection of manga books to try.

Also at Gateshead Library is ‘Anime Attacks’, an event this Saturday 22 October, celebrating all things Japanese – arts, crafts, music fashion, food, games for all to enjoy.
