Lord Lawson of Beamish School
Lord Lawson of Beamish School has 1,500 pupils on role and has an intake from across the north east area because of its excellent achievements and academic results. In the last OfSTED report the school was quoted as Outstanding in 2006. The school has a safe and secure environment for both staff and students. A brand new building and facilities with a PFI build and was newly opened in 2007, with highly resourced classrooms and range of courses available. Lord Lawson School aims to develop core values with learning and creativity. The house blocks are in place for support, encouragement and to be a secure environment. Mutual respect is shown for both pupils and staff. The school has held Arts college status since 1998. Lord Lawson has links and working partnerships regionally, nationally and internationally.
The student council assists the staff in listening to the voice of the pupils. Our in-house facility includes hairdressing and vocational courses including plumbing, electronics and nursery nursing. Outside links with car mechanics and bricklaying are offered at the local colleges for other vocational courses. All these events and experiences are preparing students for the demands of adult life.
Outside normal classroom lessons many events occur including school productions and concerts, music lessons, after schools clubs, revision and coursework sessions, school trips and educational visits. There are also various sports activities including basketball, netball, hockey and tennis and the school has strong links to Birtley Athletics Club and with all the primary schools in the area. These include Ravensworth Terrace Primary School, Kibblesworth Primary School, Birtley East Primary School, Barley Mow Primary School and Portobello Primary School.
