History at Lord Lawson of Beamish School

“How do you know who you are unless you know where you come from? How can you tell what’s going to happen, unless you know what’s happened before? History isn’t just about the past. It is about why we are who we are – and about what’s next”.

All the History teachers welcome and see the vital role that effective communication with parents/guardians/carers can have on the learning of students. If you have any questions or queries regarding your child’s progress in History please feel free to contact your child’s class teacher either via email or by telephone (0191 433 4026). Alternatively, you can contact Miss S. Martin (Subject Leader for History) on the number and email above.

Our Expectations:

YR 10 History

1.) Regular and punctual attendance to lessons. If a student is absent we expect them to come and ask for the work they have missed and to catch up promptly.

2.) Homework is normally set weekly (except for Year 7) and is expected to be handed in on the date due. Students should seek help prior to the deadline if this is required. Students should record all History homework in their homework diary and these should be brought to each lesson. Please ask to see your child’s homework diary and check that they have completed their History homework. A 15 minute lunch time detention will be issued for failing to hand in homework on the date due.

3.) 100% effort in class and to complete work set to the best of their ability.

4.) Students to bring a school bag as well as their own pen, pencil and ruler to lessons. Students may also be expected to look after their own exercise book and glossary book at home. If so, students are expected to bring it to each of their History lessons. Failure to arrive without correct equipment will result in a 15 minute lunch time detention being issued.

5.) Arrive to lessons smartly dressed and in correct school uniform as per the whole school uniform policy.

6.) To behave in a manner that is appropriate to learning. Please be aware that disruptive behaviour and adopting a negative attitude to learning will not be tolerated by any member of staff and will be dealt with as per the whole school Behaviour for Learning policy, e.g. removal from classroom, subject report, referral to Subject Leader.

7.) To be polite and respectful to all members of staff and each other.

What Can Parents and Students Expect?

YR 10 History

The History Department is fully committed to providing quality teaching and learning. We believe that achievement is dependent on effective communication between all parties (teacher, parent & student) and that the learning process is a partnership between all of us. Therefore you can expect the History Department to

Give each student in each class at least one written, curricular target per subject per half term. Where possible students will be given chance to improve their work according to their target.

Use the whole school literacy marking symbols when marking work.

Use peer and self assessment by students as a method of assessment.

Give oral feedback, one of the most effective methods of feedback, when necessary.

Effort grade will be replaced by the symbols:

  • + Extra endeavor, over and above what was required in time spent, presentation, thought etc.
  • = What is expected for their ability – 20 mins spent on a solid piece of work.
  • Instructions not followed, incomplete, rushed, slap dash etc.
