Key Stage 3 History at Lord Lawson of Beamish School

YR 10 History

During Years 7, 8 and 9 students study Key Stage 3 History. The Key Stage 3 scheme of work that we offer at Lord Lawson is one that we believe to be both exciting and engaging. We have recently reviewed our syllabus following the new requirements of Curriculum 2008.  A brief outline of each year, for the 2009-10 academic year can be found below. As Curriculum 2008 is implemented over the next few years our Year 7 and 9 scheme of work will follow the new Year 8 thematic model. Within each year, students sit 3 formal assessments and are awarded National Curriculum levels for these.

All the History teachers welcome and see the vital role that effective communication with parents/guardians/carers can have on the learning of students. If you have any questions or queries regarding your child’s progress in History please feel free to contact your child’s class teacher either via email (email addresses on previous page) or by telephone (0191 433 4026).

What Can Parents and Students Expect?

The History Department is fully committed to providing quality teaching and learning. We believe that achievement is dependent on effective communication between all parties (teacher, parent & student) and that the learning process is a partnership between all of us. Therefore you can expect the History Department to

Key Stage 3 Classwork: Exercise books will be looked every half term. The teacher will review the last 4-6 lessons work and make an encouraging comment. (This could be done on a rota basis in lessons if appropriate.)

Homework: The History Department follows the whole school policy on the setting of homework. We will set a variety of tasks e.g. spellings, creative homework, research, source based homework and projects. Homework will be marked using the +/=/- system and the whole school literacy mark scheme.

KEY Homework’s: These will be ‘formally’ marked using success criteria and will be awarded a National Curriculum level.

Assessments: Students sit 3 assessments per year during Key Stage 3. Students will undertake structured assessment preparation work in class and will be expected to continue revising at home. Ultimately though, the final draft of the assessment will take place in EXAM conditions. Students will be provided a copy of the success criteria for their assessments. Please check your child’s homework diary weekly so you are aware of when assessments are and what revision homework your child should be doing.

Trips and Visits

The History Department values and sees the enrichment that learning outside the classroom can potentially provide students. Therefore, during the Summer Term all Year 7 students go on an educational visit to WarkWorth Castle in Northumberland as part of their study of Medieval England. We have an excellent reputation with English Heritage and each year the visit proves to be a success.
Furthermore, Year 9 students get  the opportunity to meet with a World War Two veteran and his wife (Mr and Mrs Bland). This is a unique experience for many students and it is a joy to see so many students asking questions, taking part in interactive activities and actively wanting to know more. Mr and Mrs Bland have visited Lord Lawson of Beamish School for the last 3 years and we are the only school they choose to visit.
