GCSE History

As well as being interesting, History at Lord Lawson of Beamish School has a long tradition of achievement and success. Most GCSE History students stay on for further study at A-Level.
History is a highly regarded subject as it shows students can understand how people are motivated and influence events, how complex causes and consequences link together and how our past shapes our future. The skills students develop during GCSE History are valuable for prospective employers or further study. Evaluating evidence, detecting bias and propaganda and then thinking about and organising your ideas are sophisticated skills. Communicating ideas clearly and concisely are the basic tools for any student.

At the bottom of this page please click on either ‘Year 10 History’ or ‘Year 11 History’ to find out more information about that particular course.

Please remember that ‘Year 11 History’

refers to the old GCSE History course and the current Year 11 will be the last cohort of students to study this course.

Revision:

It is important to remember that those students in Year 10 will sit their Unit 1 exam during the examination period at the end of Year 10.

YR 10 History

The History Department offers students structured revision sessions covering all aspects of the course in terms of both content and skills. The Department recommends students attend and come prepared to as many of the revision sessions as is possible. During the academic year the History Department will publish a timetable of revision sessions on this webpage.

The History Department also provides all students with complimentary revision workbooks and we highly recommend students complete the revision tasks within them. As well as this, students are able to purchase other revision guides from the History department. However, in terms of the new AQA History course, details regarding revision publications are still to be released.

Study Tours:

The History Department at Lord Lawson of Beamish School has an outstanding reputation for offering learning outside of the classroom. During the October half term in Year 11, students undertaking the GCSE History course will get the opportunity to take part in a History study tour to either the battlefields of WWI in France and Belgium or Berlin and Krakow (this includes a visit a Auschwitz Concentration Camp). The organising teacher will send out letters to interested students during the autumn term of Year 10.
