GCSE Media Studies
All students will need to complete three pieces of Section A coursework in year 10; one Practical Production in Year 11 and preparation for a controlled test at the end of the GCSE course. Section A coursework is worth a total of 25% of overall grade; Section B Practical Production is worth 25% and the controlled test is worth 50% of the GCSE in Media Studies.
SECTION A:
For 2009 examination, the three pieces of Section A coursework comprise of:
1.) Analysis of tabloid newspaper cover; production of own tabloid cover; evaluation of the success of own production.
2.) Analysis of horror film; production of horror dvd cover; evaluation of the success of own production.
3.) Analysis of radio webpage; production of own webpage design; evaluation of the success of own production.
For 2010 examination, the three pieces of Section A coursework comprise of:
1.) Analysis of magazine front cover; production of own magazine cover; evaluation of the
2.) Analysis of horror film; production of horror DVD cover; evaluation of the success of own production.
3.) a) Analysis of a specific music genre; production of own music CD cover; evaluation of the success of own production. OR
b) Analysis of the situation comedy genre; production of own sitcom storyboard or proposal; evaluation of production success.

The project requires research into audience, style and institutional issues surrounding the media chosen. Students will be expected to work on this independently, both in school and at home. Any technology required to complete the production must be agreed beforehand.
CONTROLLED TEST:
The examination in Media is in the form of a controlled test, which takes place in school during late May of each year. Students are given the tasks from the 1st May, in order to prepare themselves in advance. Whilst they cannot take this preparation into the controlled test, it is an invaluable opportunity for students to increase their potential grade.
